Goa is India’s top wedding destination for hosting all kinds of weddings. Whether you plan for a big fat Indian wedding or a quaint intimate affair, Goa has the natural beauty and the infrastructure to make your wedding dreams come true.
Traditional Indian Hindu weddings involve a number of rituals and ceremonies that have evolved since Vedic times and differ among the different regions, families and societies of India. Modern Destination Hindu weddings however are much shorter and are mostly a two or three day affair.
Prior to the marriage festivities families usually organize various ceremonies and events. Some of the famous ones are the “Mehendi”- where henna is applied to the bride’s hands and feet and the “Sangeet” – an evening of musical entertainment where family and friends sing & dance for the couple.
The main wedding day normally starts off with a “Baraat”- where the groom enters the wedding on a horse or elephant accompanied by a brass band and the grooms party. The procession walks along to a meeting point where they meet with the family of the bride and conduct another ceremony called the “Milni”
The Bride then arrives at the wedding in a royal palanquin called a “Doli” carried be four men and is brought to a special stage for a special ceremony called the “Varmala” which involves an exchange of garlands between the bridal couple as they are also showered with petals.
The Bridal Couple & Family then proceed to the “Vidhi Mandap” which is a traditional canopy adorned with flowers and ornaments. This is where the main wedding ceremony takes place which includes a number of rituals including the “Pheras” where the couple conducts seven circuits around the Holy Fire which is considered a witness to the vows they make to each other. With each circuit, the couple makes a specific vow to establish some aspect of a happy and successful relationship.
The Ceremony is usually followed by a formal Reception Party where everyone gets to wish the couple followed by a gala dinner. Couples also prefer an informal cocktail dinner instead of a reception party and the adventurous ones also like to make it an enjoyable theme night.
